Beyer vs. Green: Round by Round!

March 15, 2005

By Uwe Betker

The rematch between the WBC super middleweight world champion Markus Beyer and his challenger, interim world champion Danny Green, is one of those fights that people will talk about still in years to come. This highly dramatic fight, which took place on 12 March in Zwickau, Germany, is definitely a candidate for the title “fight of the year.” It deserves a closer look, so let’s study it, round by round.

Round 1
Contrary to expectations, Green starts rather restrained. Beyer lands the first punch of the match with his left. Both boxers keep their guards up, there are few hits. Beyer has the more variable punches though and manages to get through a couple of times with body punches and head shots.

Round 2
Green increases the pressure and lands a nice left hook. There are a lot of punches with not much effect since they hit the cover only. Upt to now the fight has been relatively fair, but now referee Laurence Cole has to intervene the first time: he warns Green because of simultaneously holding and hitting below the belt. After that, Green loses his pace and has to take several punches to body and head with one getting him out of balance for a second.

Round 3
Green has a good start again and manages to land a left jab. In the middle of the round he again hits too low without need and afterwards does not get back into his rhythm. Beyer dominates the second half of the round and hits Green with two hooks to the liver and two right jabs to the head. His last punch knocks out Green’s gumshield.

Round 4
Green increases the pressure once more and lands a hard left swing. Both boxers have lowered their guard a bit by now. Green lands the harder punches and hits more often.

Round 5
Beyer has a powerful start. He hits with his right hand, landing both hooks and jabs. Several time he gets through with his left jab. A few times there is an open exchange of blows where Beyer also gains the upper hand.

Round 6
Green is stronger. He lands more punches than Beyer. 10 seconds before the sounding of the bell the Australian shoots two hard rights to the champion’s head.

Round 7
Green dominates the first two minutes without however being able to land any hard punches. Then he has to take a right cross and a left hook, both to the head, losing his gumshield again. This action gets Beyer back into the match. Again and again he lands hard punches.

Round 8
The pattern stays the same: Green dominates the middle of the ring and keeps the pressure up. The champion moves around the challenger waiting for his chance to counter. A strong round for the challenger. At the end of the round Beyer manages to connect with some single punches.

Round 9
As so often before in this match Green dominates the first two minutes, without however being able to connect. And,also as before, Beyer comes forward in the last third of the round and hits more often and more precisely. Green gives the impression of being helpless and headbutts Beyer. Referee Cole does not take any points from Green but warns him. The round ends with Green having to take a hard left cross.

Round 10
Green keeps the pace up but receives more counter hits than he is able to hit himself.

Round 11
You can clearly see that both fighters are tired. But they still throw a high volume of punches, with Beyer keeping the upper hand.

Round 12
Immediately when the round starts Green hits Beyer with a hard right hand to the chin and a left to the temple. Beyer is hit hard and hardly able to keep standing. Half falling, half walking he is stumbling around, followed by Green who is trying to land the decisive punch. But Green is too eager and, missing his aim, falls on Beyer. Both slide down the ropes. Cole gives Beyer a standing eight-count. Green seeks the knockout now. Beyer entrenches himself behind his double cover and suffers Green’s unprecise flurry of punches. Again and again Beyer manages to save himself into a clinch or to break free. Green loses his gumshield again, which gets Beyer additional time to recover. Even in the last round Beyer is able to mobilize his reserves. He even manages to get back into the match and fight back. Green slows down more and more and gets even more unprecise. His punches go wide.

Summary:
This was a great fight. It was the classic meeting of an aggressive puncher and a skilled counter boxer. This is how the judges scored: Martin Denkin (USA) 115-112, Massimo Barrovecchio (Italy) 114-114 and Anok Hongtongkam (Thailand) 114-113. Fightnews scored the match with 115-112 points for Beyer. Scores, however, cannot really reflect the great performance of Markus Beyer, the former and present WBC world champion at super middleweight. In that last round, his challenger Danny Green was only one punch away from the title, but it was a punch he wasn’t able to land that night. Beyer has impressively shown what made him and what still makes him champion.
